The Department of Justice has acknowledged that FBI agents have read terrorist suspects their Miranda rights overseas, "to preserve the quality of evidence obtained".
To which I reply: "Are you fucking kidding me?" What's next, paying legal fees for their hand-picked ACLU lawyers?
There is so much wrong with this, I'm just going to jump right in.
1. The Miranda laws need to be changed. If you're not a US citizen or in this country legally, they shouldn't apply equally to you. You can keep your mouth shut and have a lawyer around, but ANYTHING you say AT ANY TIME ought to be admissible evidence.
2. Terrorist dirtbags are NOT criminals, they are enemy combatants, and therefore have no rights other than basic food and shelter. If some of our guys have to knock you around a little bit to obtain information that could save American lives, then tough shit for you. Stop trying to kill Americans and we'll stop kicking your ass. Be thankful we're not sawing your head off. Yet.
3. Exactly what kind of "quality of evidence" are they trying to preserve? If some raghead bastard clams up and remains silent, what good does that do? Preserve the quality of the silence, ensuring the Feds don't have to endure hours of the mush-mouthed goat-bleat that passes for a language with these jerks for no payoff?
4. Did we send our combat forces over there to be soldiers or cops?
General Patraeus has said it's something the Feds do, not the military, and he's fine with it as it is. However, a senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee who has just returned from Afghanistan and Bagram said that the procedure is really starting to gum up the works. And that ain't good. He's worried, like I am, that it could cause our troops to have to worry about any given situation being a criminal event or a combat event. That only makes for more dead Americans, and that is bullshit.
What is really scary is that according to reports, the FBI is planning to take over some of the CIA's responsibilities in these matters, "under the assumption that most of these suspects would end up in a court of law."
Why the fuck should they ever end up in a court of law? The best that these bastards should ever receive is a military tribunal. And frankly, I think the best that most of them deserve is a bullet in the head.
And, while we're at it, why is the FBI operating overseas in a combat zone? Isn't the FBI supposed to be a domestic agency? Why are they getting into the CIA's racket? To muddy the waters with more of the Hussein administration's bullshit?
Keep the Feds where they belong, and let the military and the Spooks do their jobs.
Can't wait for Ranger Steve's reaction to this...
